How to Use Transparent Shadow Overlays in a Mockup

Position a transparent shadow PNG above a mockup, adjust scale and opacity, and keep the lighting believable across a design series.

A transparent shadow PNG is flexible because it can sit above a photo, render or mockup as an independent layer. The challenge is making it look attached to the scene.

Match geometry first

Create an overlay with the NexTools Shadow Generator. In your design editor, scale and rotate it in relation to the visible surface. A shadow crossing a table and a vertical wall may need separate layers or masking; one flat overlay rarely follows both planes naturally.

Tune opacity and edges

Lower opacity, adjust the blend mode if useful, and soften hard edges that conflict with the photo. Compare the shadow's dark areas with other shadows already present. If a product casts light to the right, a new leftward window shadow creates mixed cues unless the scene genuinely has two sources.

Save the working file with its layers intact. When exporting for stock or clients, check the result at final dimensions and include the clean underlying image if the deliverable requires flexibility.
