How to Upscale a Small Image for Stock Submission

Enlarge a small photo or illustration, check the final pixel count and inspect details at 100% before deciding whether it is suitable for stock.

Upscaling increases pixel dimensions, but a larger file is not automatically suitable for stock. The important question is whether the enlarged image still looks credible at inspection size.

Measure the source first

Record its dimensions and identify the weak areas: hair, text, foliage, clean edges or repeated patterns. Try a modest enlargement in the NexTools Image Upscaler. Compare the result against the original at 100%, not only in a fit-to-screen preview.

Inspect before submitting

Look for invented texture, waxy surfaces, halos and broken lettering. Check the final pixel count against the destination marketplace's current requirements, then inspect the whole frame rather than just the center. If the source is heavily blurred or compressed, another image may be a better choice than an aggressive 4x enlargement.

Save both versions. Describe the edited image honestly where a platform asks for AI or processing disclosures. Acceptance depends on the marketplace's rules and its quality review, not merely on meeting a size threshold.
